Up Quark

The last five years have been fraught with illness, emergency surgeries, isolation, anxiety and depression.  My brain does not process information the way it used to, leaving me with an inability to process the written word in the way I used to, making reading difficult on good days and impossible on bad.

UpQuark, 2021 - 2022

My ability to piece, sew, and quilt has not been impacted, and I am glad to have the ability to communicate through my art.

Because writing is difficult for me, I may at times only publish photos and captions.  I am also figuring out this platform as I go, so please be gentle.

Up Quark, above, was created as a response to trauma.  As I was learning to manage with chronic pain and autoimmune diseases, people kept telling me to “stay positive”, a nearly impossible prescription.  But not impossible.  The Up Quark is the smallest positively-charged particle in the cosmos.

As with most of my work, all of the fabrics used in the piece were “resurrected” - taken from the waste stream in one way or another, as a comment on the human and environmental devastation attributable to Fast Fashion.  Some fabrics were purchased from estate sales or garage sales, some from resale shops, while some were raided from the closets of friends or family or scavenged from dumpsters.  Given the amount of labor involved in a piece, I like to think I make Slow Art in response to Fast Fashion.

I hope you like what you see and that you will come back often.
